AP MLC and GITAM University director MVVS Murthy died in an accident in US


Andhra Pradesh MLC, GITAM University director and Senior TDP Leader MVVS Murthy 80, died in a car accident in the United States of America on Tuesday.

According to reports Murthy was travelling along with four others of his family members from California to Alaska to visit a wildlife safari near Anchorage when their car collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction. Four people, including Murthy, died in the accident while one person has been admitted to the hospital in a critical condition.

Whereas two of them died on the spot while two others lost their lives on the way to the hospital. The other deceased have been identified as Basava Punnaiah, Veeramachineni Siva Ramakrishna and VBR Chowdary.

Murthy was in US for the last few weeks and was scheduled to attend a GITAM University alumnus meet in California on October 6.

MVVS Murthy was a two-time Lok Sabha MP from Visakhapatnam constituency.

Murthy is a multifaceted personality imbibing the qualities of an industrialist, educationist, politician and philanthropist with social responsibility. After a brief stint as Advocate in the High court of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad, he moved on to business and established Visakha Bottling Company (VBC) in 1967 with a modest investment. Because of his hard work and meticulous planning, the VBC was a phenomenal success in the manufacturing of soft drinks and earned the name of Gold Spot Murthy

In 1980, he started Gitam college of Engineering and Technology. It grew to be granted deemed University status in 2007. He is popularly known as Gitam Murthy.
He was elected to Lok Sabha in 1990 on Telugu Desam Party(TDP) ticket. Recently, he was made Member of Legislative Council in the bifurcated Andhra Pradesh.
